During the meeting, founding members of the Association signed the Charter of the New Orleans Bar Association. These founding members were distinguished lawyers in New Orleans and many later became Presidents and Board Members of the Association. A notable member present at the meeting was prominent lawyer Ms. Jessy Benedict Gessner, one of the first female lawyers in New Orleans. Report about the origins of the new orleans Bar Association
In conducting our research for NOBA's 100th Anniversary, NOBA found references to the "New Orleans Bar Association" in news articles dated in 1876 and 1905, before the New Orleans Bar Association was founded in 1924. We reached out to Hon. Chelsey Richard Napoleon, Orleans Civil District Court Clerk of Court, to help us find out what organization these articles are referring to or if NOBA was in fact founded more than 100 years ago. Ms. Napoleon and Ina Fandrich, Deputy Clerk-Archivist looked into it and helped us find the answer in the history of the Louisiana Bar Association. Their Report can be viewed below.
