The Rule of Law and Judicial Independence
In our courts, the rule of law is the fabric that lawyers and judges weave daily. The rule of law gives us the structure to operate in society, the fairness for trust in our institutions, and the predictability that our society needs to function. Learn how the rule of law provides prosperity, education, healthcare, and peace and why the independence of the judiciary is the special responsibility of lawyers and bar associations.

Speakers: Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, USDC EDLA
Judge Nakisha Ervin-Knott, La. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals
Judy Perry Martinez, ABA Past President
Thomas M. Flanagan, NOBA President-Elect

3:15 - 4:45 p.m.

Meet the Judges Round Robin

Like musical chairs, groups of 4-5 lawyers rotate tables every 10 minutes to
different tables of judges. The program gives lawyers the opportunity to meet
and interact with judges from federal, state, city, and municipal levels.

You'll spend time learning:

  • What judges expect in their courtrooms
  • What judges won't tolerate
  • Whether any special rules exist that are particular to
    the judge's court
  • Any other practice pointers, professionalism questions,
or pleading issues that you've wondered about

4:45 - 6:00 p.m.
