On April 22, 2023, the New Orleans Bar Association Young Lawyers' Section hosted the New Orleans Bar & Grille law firm cooking competition chaired by Matt Slaughter with Honorary Chair Judge Ellen Hazeur. Teams of amateur chefs from local law firms competed for "Best Traditional Dish," "Best Dessert," "Best Cocktail/Mocktail," "Most Creative Dish," "Team Spirit," "Crowd Favorite," and "Best Overall Dish" determined by our panel of judges. Proceeds from the cooking competition benefit the Veterans Justice Fellowship. Congratulations to the 2023 Bar & Grille Cooking Competition winners!


Best Overall: McGlinchey Stafford - An Ode to the Original Fast Food

Team McGlinchey swept the award categories, with first-place wins for Best Overall Dish, Crowd Favorite, Most Creative Dish (Lil' Mac), Team Spirit and Best Dessert for their Lil' Mac hamburger with all-beef patty, special sauce, cheese, pickles and onions on a fabulous little bun, and their Apple Pie-Bono fried apple pie-let with yummy glaze & a twinkle sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. They also placed second in Best Traditional Dish and Most Creative Dish (Apple Pie-Bono). It was delicious!

Move aside, McDonalds, McGlinchey is taking over the golden arches!

           

 

 


Best Cocktail: Stone Pigman 

Stone Pigman did it again winning Best Cocktail for the second year in a row. Their cocktail, The Verdict, is a refreshing and sophisticated cocktail that combines the crisp flavors of cucumber, the warming notes of ginger, and the smoothness of vodka, all enhanced by a hint of artisanal citrus blend, that had the Bar & Grille crowd coming back for more. The Verdict also took second place in Crowd Favorite and the team took third place in the Best Traditional Dish category for their Don't Dis-Báhn Mi, slow-smoked pulled pork with a Thai chili and hoisin sauce, garnished with pickled daikon and carrot, cucumber, jalapeño, a drizzle of liquid aminos, mayo on a Dong Phuong pistolette. The team's submissions also earned them second place Best Overall.


Best Traditional Dish: Liskow & Lewis

Liskow & Lewis brought a taste of home to the Peristyle with their Deep Fried Gumbo served with Potato Salad & Crystal Hot Sauce Aioli. The team won Best Traditional Dish and third place in both the Crowd Favorite and Most Creative categories. Liskow paired their fried gumbo with an Aperol Spritz.


JJC - JJ Claw & the Patty Smashers

JJC brought the heat with their Slammy Sammies, a Crustacean-less Griddled Beef Cake on Potato Bun with Cheese, and A Tasty Tequiler spicy Margarita. Team JJC earned second place Best Cocktail, third place Team Spirit, and third place Best Overall.

 

 


Pipes Miles Beckman - Strawberry Fields Forever

Pipes Miles Beckman earned second place Best Dessert for their Ain't She Sweet (Cake). Their Happiness is a Warm Tortilla (Taco) dish and Strawberry Cocktail were also delicious!

 


Baker Donelson - Shake'N'Baker

Team Shake'N'Baker Donelson earned second place Most Team Spirit. Their Ricky Bobby Burger and Mojito Dew Racing Fuel had them ready for a race at Talladega. Shake'N'Bake!

 

 


Mouledoux Bland Legrand & Brackett

Mouledoux Bland Legrand & Brackett had a tropical theme and earned third place Best Cocktail for their Mai Tai. Originating from the Tiki culture, the bright colored drink quenched the judges' thirst with its mixture of rum, grenadine, orgeat syrup, orange juice, and pineapple. It brought the beaches of paradise to the Bar & Grille! Their other paradise submissions were their Seared Tuna over Hawaiian Coleslaw and their Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes.

      

 

 

 

Honorable Mentions:

Phelps Dunbar - Phestin with Phelps

Jazz Fest may be missing crawfish bread this year, but Phelps brought it to the Bar & Grille! Their Crawfish Bread was a magnificent French loaf stuffed with scrumptious crawfish étouffée and cheese. It paired perfectly with their Hard Mango Freeze, a refreshing icy plunge into the Mango infused daiquiri delight made with frozen mango chunks, rum, and ice cubes.
 

 



 

Jones Walker 

Jones Walker brought Augusta to City Park with their putting green, Azalea Cocktail, Pimento Cheese Sandwich, and greenery. 

 

 



 

Deutsch Kerrigan - Bad News Barristers

Deutsch Kerrigan swung for the fences with their Hipster Hotdogs, Grand Slam Mojitos, and Deconstructed Apple Pie!

 


 

 

 

Barrasso Usdin - Barrasso Beach Barristers

Barrasso Usdin brought us to the beach with their Kickin' Chicken Skewers and Barrasso Breeze Rum Punch!
 

 


 


 

 

Adams and Reese

Team Adams and Reese, Hawaii presented Kings Hawaiian Cheeseburger Sliders and Mai Tai Rum Punch. Mahalo!
