We are in Plaquemine, Louisiana today for Iberville’s finest (or perhaps only) king cake. We are reviewing the Sugah Rush Cakes & Confections Bavarian Cream king cake!

As I believe I’ve mentioned before, all travel is an opportunity for eating, and during carnival, all travel (even across town, but definitely to other Louisiana cities) is an opportunity to try a new king cake. This extends to work travel and, now, the work travel of my friends and colleagues. My colleague recently had very official work business in Iberville Parish and recognized the opportunity that was on our hands. Iberville Parish is part of the greater Baton Rouge metropolitan area and, I’ll be honest, I don’t make it over there all that often. What is their king cake situation? Let’s find out.

Let me tell y’all how this king cake was presented to me, because it is hilarious. First, my colleague texted me to find out what time I would be in the office so that I could photograph the cake and have the first slice. Next, he brought the cake to me in my office with with plates, napkins, and knife. Third, and finally, he printed out the Facebook information page for Sugah Rush and taped it to the box, at which time we learned that a king cake box is the exact size of a sheet of legal paper, lol. 

I was pleasantly surprised when he presented me with the Bavarian Cream-filled king cake. He assured me that, upon pickup, he had been told that the cakes were baked fresh daily. Y’all know how important that is!

After taking the requisite number of photographs, it was time to try our freshly baked, Bavarian-cream filled delicacy.

Let’s start with the dough, which was obviously fresh and not dry at all. It was bready and not super sweet. It didn’t appear to have been braided or twisted in any fashion, but it was super fresh.

The white icing was layered on top of the purple, green, and gold sugar, which is an interesting choice that you don’t see very often. I didn’t find anything particularly remarkable about the icing, but you have to agree—this is a healthy-sized, good looking cake that makes quite a nice little presentation. I would be quite pleased to show up somewhere with a cake that looked like this.

My colleague noted that the Bavarian cream was “what you would expect from a filled donut.” I agreed—it was quite good and, while it maybe wasn’t anything incredibly special, Bavarian cream is delicious and this was good Bavarian cream.

Overall, I think we were both a bit surprised by how much we liked this cake. We agreed this was a perfectly enjoyable king cake for its context. We said, in unison and with a bit of caution in our collective voices, this cake was “just FINE.” After he sent his email and put the cake in the kitchen for the masses, he apparently got a lot of “surprisingly positive” feedback. He texted me this because he thought I might “appreciate a few more data points.” 

I’ll put it to you this way. If I were in Plaquemine and needed a king cake, I would totally buy one from Sugah Rush again. I’m not sure I’ll be making any special trips over to Iberville for this, but I also live in New Orleans, so why would I? Also, they ship to any state! So if you want to try this out, go for it! Do it! Why not?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—the freshness of your cake matters! It matters a lot. 4 stars for this Plaquemine treat.
