Big Easy Bootcamp

On October 24th, newly admitted members of the bar participated in Big Easy Bootcamp: Basic Training for New Lawyers in New Orleans (sm). Seasoned lawyers and judges in New Orleans spoke on various topics that all lawyers should know. Young Lawyers Section members Andrew Albritton, McGlinchey Stafford, and Jose Ruiz, Deutsch Kerrigan chaired the program. Following the program, speakers and attendees enjoyed a reception at Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar sponsored by Toups & Co.

The first panel of the day covered "Making a Good Impression when Approaching the Bench." Judge Carl Barbier, Judge Ellen Hazeur, and Judge Omar Mason addressed courtroom demeanor and how to properly utilize resources in the courtroom. The judges also offered advice on asking the right questions and tips on how to make your day in court successful.

The program continued with "Practicing in State and Federal Court" Speakers Rebekka Veith and Camille Gauthier explored the similarities and differences between litigating in State and Federal Court. Attendees learned how, when, and what they need to file in each court, including the necessary documents, the best methods for filing, and when they can expect to be heard.

Nan Alessandra, Camille Bryant, and Chelsea Brener Cusimano discussed the "Top 10 Things Every Associate Should Know." They answered questions like "what does it take to be a top notch associate?" and "what are the expectations when you practice in a small firm versus a larger firm?"


Meghan Bitoun and Melissa Lessell

Melissa Lessell and Meghan Bitoun spoke on "Ethical Issues You Will Inevitably  Encounter." They offered practical information on ethics geared towards new lawyers. Attendees learned about ethical issues encountered more by new lawyers, the nuances of professional responsibility, attorney-client relationships, confidentiality, malpractice, and the use of social media.

Jess Waltmann

We closed the CLE portion of the day with "Mastering Cocktail Conversation." Harry Rosenberg, Jess Waltman, and Graham Williams provided answers to questions that friends of lawyers might ask, such as getting someone out of jail, needing a will, family issues, and real estate problems.
