Queer and Unusual: Emerging Trends in the Criminalization of LGBTQ People

CLE & Social Celebrating Pride Month

This CLE will explore the intersections of LGBTQ rights and criminal law, historically and in the current political moment. The first portion will discuss the ways how criminal prohibitions have been used historically to discriminate against and limit freedom among LGBTQ people. We will then discuss how those issues have impacted the local LGBTQ community, with a focus on Louisiana’s Crime Against Nature by Solicitation (CANS) statute. This training will conclude with a discussion of emerging areas of litigation, including Eighth Amendment claims, modern forms of surveillance/Fourth Amendment challenges, and issues relating to the incarceration of queer people.
