Leaning In to Negotiate

May 16 2013 | News

Negotiating one’s legal career may be more about practice area, case load, and law firm relationships in the early years, attendees to the first of NOBA’s Lean In series noted after watching a webinar on negotiation. Marta Schnabel, O’Bryon & Schnabel, moderated as lawyers voiced the opinion that negotiating in the traditional business sense of one’s salary and position tends not to fit in the structured model of larger firms, but partners were on hand to remind them that once they achieve partner level it is a constant negotiating of one’s value and perception in the firm. This quickly gave way to cultural differences in how men are breed to do this and thrive in this environment along with practical advice on how women can use their strengths to compete in this same arena. The summer series sponsored by the Women’s Committee continues on June 12thwith Lynn Luker, Lynn Luker & Associates, leading a discussion on Level the Playing Field.
