YLS Public Service Initiatives - Volunteer Now!
April 22 2020 | Committees
During this critical time of need for so many people in our community, the New Orleans Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Sections is encouraging NOBA members to give back, and we are providing the below resources, ideas, and links to help facilitate. If you have extra food, home-goods, time, knowledge, or expertise, please consider donating to the people in our community less fortunate, who are being hit hardest by COVID-19 and the city shutdown. We know there are so many great, local organizations that are answering the call to help right now. Below is just a shortlist of organizations that NOBA has worked and communicated with regarding their needs.
The YLS is sponsoring a food drive to collect food for Lantern Light, providing daily support to the homeless and the less fortunate in New Orleans.
- Daily Meals & Snack Bags: Lantern Light has joined forces with Grace at the Green Light, St. Jude Community Center, the Homeless Unit of the Police Department, and other organizations, to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner in the St. Joseph Church parking lot. In addition to hot meals, these organizations are providing snack bags for people to bring home. In connection with this project, we are soliciting donations of: cold cuts, sliced bread, individually-bagged cookies and snacks, fruit cups.
- Food Bank: Lantern Light is also continuing to distribute food from its food back to nearby families in need. For the food bank, we are soliciting donations of: canned vegetables, ramen noodles, canned tuna, Vienna sausages, cereal, peanut butter, grits, oatmeal, bars of soap.
- If you have any food donations, NOBA will pick them up from you curb-side and deliver them to Lantern Light. Please contact Chrissy Calogero, firstname.lastname@example.org, to schedule your pick-up.
Cleaning out your closets? We are soliciting home-goods in good condition, such as sheets and blankets and cleaning supplies, to donate to the Family Justice Center. The Family Justice Center provides a range of free services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and child abuse in the Greater New Orleans area. These donations will be used to help clients who have recently moved into new apartments or living situations. NOBA will pick up the items from you and deliver them to FJC. Please contact Chrissy Calogero, email@example.com, to schedule your pick-up.
The Pro Bono Project
The Pro Bono Project is currently open and working virtually to address ongoing civil legal needs in your community. For volunteers interested in assisting the organization, we are seeking assistance with returning calls on a variety of legal issues, assisting callers who are representing themselves at Orleans and Jefferson Parish District Courts and develop quick 3-5 minute legal presentations to share with the public. For details on these volunteer opportunities, please visit https://prezi.com/view/oCnd8hOPVYqtIfebfGOC/ to view a slideshow detailing volunteering virtually or to view our video presentation, visit https://prezi.com/v/zkzeimh2cb6o/ - Attorneys who would like to view our available cases and register to volunteer are welcome to click the following link: https://bit.ly/3cggvSe.
