Study Group on Cuba

May 21 2014 | Committees

Gary LaGrange, President & CEO of the Port of New Orleans, was the featured speaker for the Study Group on Cuba's first Committee meeting of 2014. The meeting was held yesterday, May 20th, at the New Orleans Bar Association and addressed the Cuban port development's impact on the Gulf South. Mr. LeGrange started off the discussion by outlining a major goal for the Port of New Orleans, which was diversification to expand and broaden import and export inventory. Mr. LaGrange explored the historic connections between New Orleans and Cuba. Prior to the current embargo against Cuba, one third of all cargo imported and exported to New Orleans was from Cuba. Mr. LaGrange suggested that when Cuba experiences a political and economic opening and the embargo ends, New Orleans is poised to renew this relationship. He explained that cash sales, chemicals, and poultry were the key factors for exportation to Cuba, and that both energy and medical supplies were the opportunities going forward.
