Information is not possible to completely remove once on portable devices, it is only possible to make it economically infeasible to obtain quipped Dr. Gavin Manes of Avansic at NOBA’s Benefits and Dangers of Portable Devices CLE. The first in this month’s Free on Fridays series, targeted to all things tech related, Dr. Manes spoke to a packed room about the precautions lawyers need to take using portable devices. He quickly demonstrated how easy passwords on devices are to overcome, and the startling ability for one to send a text or phone call disguised as another number. With many using portable devices to communicate with clients it is especially important that the information is protected. At the other end of the spectrum, Dr. Manes showed how the meta-data of photos includes important evidence such as the geographical location of where it was taken and the type of device used to take it. From his experiences as an expert witness he was able to attest to how information from portable devices is used in courtrooms every day, but still is difficult to fully obtain and the courts do not always have precedents on how to use this information. Learn more about current technology and the law as the Free on Friday series continues August 9, 16, 23, and 30.
