How the Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) Helps Lawyers Get Clients
NOBA helps lawyers expand their client base through the Lawyer Referral Service which receives over 25,000 calls and emails each year. The LRS is publicized on television, in the local yellow pages, brochures and by the courts. The callers are referred to the LRS attorneys and/or appropriate social service agencies. Approximately 6,700 referrals are made annually by the bar association to the LRS attorneys.

2. Clients are screened to determine their legal needs.
3. Referrals in over 35 areas of law.
4. Your services are marketed for you.
5. We want you to succeed!
How Does the Lawyer Referral Service Work?
1. First, you must be a member of the New Orleans Bar Association to belong to the referral service.
2. Complete the application for membership on the LRS panel and mail it in with your membership fee.
3. A person wishing to consult with an attorney may telephone the LRS. Callers needing legal advice will be given an opportunity to briefly state the problem and then be referred to an attorney in that area of law.
4. Attorneys participating in the LRS agree to provide an initial consultation of up to one-half for a fee of no more than $25.00. Fees and services beyond the first half-hour are arranged between the LRS client and the attorney.
5. The bar office follows up with callers who were referred to attorneys to track the disposition of the referral and their satisfaction with the service.
6. Finally, the bar office mails periodic referral reports to each attorney which must be completed. This report determines the disposition of each referral and the effectiveness of the service.

The Family Law Modest Means Panel
The New Orleans Bar Association is working harder than ever to assist in the effort to provide affordable legal services; especially in the areas of Family Law. The Modest Means Panel has been designed to provide legal services to families whose total household income is less than $50,000 for a family of four.
Attorneys who elect to join the service will agree to charge referral clients no more than $50 per hour for services rendered. Last year, more than 15% of our referrals were in the area of Family Law, including 6% to the Modest Means panel. We anticipate an even higher percentage in the coming years. So call today and make a difference.
The Successions Modest Means Panel
In light of the succession deadline set by Road Home, the Lawyer Referral Service has set up a Modest Means Succession panel. Since this directly affects the recovery of New Orleans and the well-being of our citizens, the New Orleans Bar Association established this panel to help those who are of modest means and cannot pay customary legal fees. The Lawyer Referral Service will not charge any lawyer a fee to join this panel. The client referrals will be based on household size and income. For example, a family of four whose total household income is less than $75,000 is eligible. Please contact the Lawyer Referral Service Coordinator at (504) 525-7453 for more information.
