Construction Law Fieldtrip and Lunch -
A Boat Tour of the Inner Harbor Canal Surge Barrier on Lake Borgne
Join the Construction Law Committee to learn more about the Surge Barrier and the Corps' progress on 100-year level risk reduction.
- In an effort to provide a 100-year level risk reduction for SE Louisiana in 2011 through its Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System, the US Army Corps of Engineers is constructing the Inner Harbor Navigation Surge Barrier to protect some of the region's most vulnerable areas to flooding, including St. Bernard Parish, the Ninth Ward, New Orleans East and Metro New Orleans.
- The surge barrier, which is similar to a flood wall, but much larger, will reduce the risk to these areas from storm surge generated through the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Borgne.
- Construction of the barrier floodwall began on May 8, 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
